reed valve

Reed valves require regular inspection as they are prone to cracking or chipping.

3 sessions

Gear oil, this involves checking the oil level through the 14mm brass bolt on the front of the engine.

Bendix Drive, the flex area tends to collect dust which in the long run will impair the bendix's ability to start the engine. Cleaning requires removing the plastic clutch cover and elbow cover and spraying some degreaser while using compressed air to clean the area

Clutch, the clutch should be serviced every time the front sprocket is changed. At this point the clutch bearings should be replaced or re-lubricated, the inside of the drums should be cleaned with brake cleaner and if needed, the clutch pads should be cleaned with 800 grit sandpaper or scotch brite

3-6 meetings

Carburetor and carburetor maintenance are both factors of use and time. If you haven't used your engine for a while, you'll need to service your car, even if it hasn't been used very often. Carby repairs will require replacement of the diaphragm in basic service down to the needle and seat, or other parts of the carby, to restore it to original condition.

5-15 sessions

During this time, the engine will need a high-end makeover. Depending on the level of racing you are at, the piston and rings, small end bearings, piston pins, o-rings and gaskets will need to be replaced. A general sign that your engine may need a top-end rebuild is that you may notice a drop in bottom-end power from the engine. The engine should not exceed 10 hours before performing a high end rebuild.

30-45 sessions

During this time, your engine will need a major rebuild. This includes top end rebuild as well as replacement of connecting rods, big end bearings, crank pins, thrush washers, main bearings, seals. The engine should not have had more than 30 hours prior to performing this service.

Torque value

Head and cylinder nuts 13-16 ft-lbs/18-22 Nm

Clutch drum nut 22-29 ft-lb / 30-40 Nm

Starter Ring Retaining Nut 73-80 ft-lb/100-110 Nm

Spark Plugs 14-19 ft lbs/20-26 Nm

Exhaust Nut 13-16 ft-lb/18-22 Nm

Run-in procedure

The running-in of the engine must follow some basic rules:

  1. Adjust the carburetor. Start with adjustments on the rich side.
  2. Gradually warm up the engine at half throttle for about 10 minutes, drive a few laps at low speed, and gently turn the carb off and on. Throttle (if a tachometer is fitted, never exceed 11.000 ÷ 12.000 RPM). Never keep the same RPM for a long time.
  3. Increase speed at 3⁄4 throttle opening for 10 minutes. Never keep the same RPM for a long time.

4. Add 10 minutes at maximum speed. Accelerate through the twisty sections of the track and get the engine rich on the half-straight (immediately cover the hole in the air filter with your hand, keep the throttle wide open).

After the break-in is complete and the engine is cool, check the torque of the exhaust header nuts, as the nuts tend to loosen during the break-in process.

Lightning Karts also offers dyno break-in classes so you can pick up your engine, crank it up and start racing. Whoever built it, we're happy to provide this service to save you valuable time on the track.

jet setting

Tillotson HW27A Carburetor

X30 & TAG open

L = 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes

H = 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes

Recommended shot settings for the Tillotson HW27A carb are 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes (low) and 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes (high). The pop-up pressure should be set at 10psi and the lever height should be flush with the body of the gauge using the 37g inlet spring.

L = 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes

H = 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes

The recommended shot settings for the Tillotson HW27A carb are 1 hour to 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes (low) and 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes (high). The pop-up pressure should be set at 10psi and the lever height should be flush with the body of the gauge using the 31g inlet spring.

Triton carburetor

L = 1 hour 5 minutes

H = 1 hour 5 minutes

The recommended jetting settings for the Tryton carby are 1 hour 5 minutes on low and 1 hour 5 minutes on high, depending on location and climate it may be necessary to deviate slightly from these settings. Once you find your sweet spot, you rarely, if ever, need to make much adjustments based on it.

Suggested popping pressure is 8.5-10psi, depending on location and climate, usually 10psi is a good starting point. For lever height, it's best to start with the bottom of the lever level with the body of the carburetor, and if the carby feels like it's running out of fuel, try raising the lever further.

*Keep in mind these settings are a basic starting point, different weather conditions, fuel types and fuel qualities may require fine tuning from the above settings.

muffler elastic

Original straight mufflers and headers

IAME conducted extensive testing when developing the X30 engine, so recommended settings are 435mm to 445mm for high-speed tracks and 445mm to 455mm for tighter tracks. This is the measurement from the flange to the first weld on the muffler. It usually corresponds to a bending length of 50 mm to 70 mm. The rule of thumb for flex is that shorter flex will make more power in the higher RPM range, and longer flex will make more power in the lower RPM range. 5mm increments will be fine adjustments, while 10mm increments should make a noticeable difference.

New 2020 Curved Muffler

The 2020 muffler no longer uses flex, but instead comes with a 3mm aluminum spacer that fits between the cylinder and exhaust manifold.Installing this 3mm spacer is equivalent to adding 10mm of flex to the old muffler.

spark plug

Recommended plugs are as follows

fuel ratio

The IAME X30 can run between 16:1 and 25:1, but we recommend 18:1 for most oils. To determine the correct amount of oil, use our oil/fuel ratio chart.

The X30 ignition has a rev limiter that engages at 15,800rpm. It's a soft-cut limiter that works by retarding the ignition to the point where the engine is no longer producing power. Since it's a soft-cut limiter, it's not uncommon for the engine to rev above the limiter on draft or at the end of long straights when using high gearing.
