Facebook Profile Picture Size (Profiles & Pages)

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (1)

Unlike cover photos, profile photos not only appear on your Facebook timeline (aka profile page), but also appear on every post you share, comment you leave, Facebook search results, and people's timelines, in whom you post messages. In most cases it will be a small thumbnail, so you should crop it properly.

Needless to say, this is probably the most important visual representation of you on Facebook, so make sure you get it right.

A profile picture is a square picture that measures168px mal 168pxon the desk. However, note that even though you upload a square photo, it will be cropped into a circle.

So make sure your image respects the rounded corners. You don't want logos or focal points to be cut off.

Facebook also saves a higher resolution version at320px mal 320px.

However, the profile picture seen in the comments you make will be reduced in size and reduced to a square image40px mal 40px.

Finally, when someone clicks on your profile photo, it can be displayed as large as possible850px mal 850px. The highest resolution Facebook stores is2048px mal 2048px.

Damn it, Dustin, that's a lot of sizes to remember - it makes me dizzy trying to follow it all.

Fear not, friend; I'm gonna make it really easy for you.

When creating your profile picture, I recommend making it at the highest resolution,2048px mal 2048px.

This ensures that you present the highest quality image for your most important Facebook asset - your profile picture. That's how people will get to know you, so you want it to be good.

Down and Dirty Measurements:

  • Maximum size:2048px mal 2048px
  • minimum:168px mal 168px
  • Recommended minimum size:761px wrong 761px
  • Aspect ratio:1:1

Pro Tip:People like to connect with your eyes, so make sure your eyes (and mouth, preferably a smile) are visible in the smallest size of your Facebook profile picture.

Facebook Cover Photo Size (Profile)

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (4)

At the top of your personal Facebook timeline, your cover photo is the perfect place to showcase your personality.

A timeline cover photo measures851px mal 315px. This is the minimum size at which Facebook will display the photo.

For those of you who like aspect ratios, that's where the cover image comes into play2,7:1.

However, just likeImage sizes from Instagram, the display size is not the only size you should know.

bonus reading: If you also want to create a great Twitter profile header image, YouTube channel art, or LinkedIn header, I have a post about itCover photos for social media.

If you look behind the source code, you'll find that Facebook saves a higher resolution version, and the cap seems to be2037px mal 754px. So if you want the highest resolution image, use these dimensions.

However, if you view it on a mobile device with retina display or otherhigh resolutionDisplays (which most smartphones have these days) is the actual display size1125px mal 633px.

Down and Dirty Measurements:

  • Maximum size:2037px mal 754px
  • minimum:851px mal 315px
  • Aspect ratio:2,7:1

Pro tip:Make your profile cover something personal that makes you look like a real person.

Don't think of it as a banner ad, think of it as an extension of your profile picture. Avoid text and calls-to-action at all costs.

Also note that due to certain UI elements, portions of your profile coverage will be obscured.

If you'd like, I've created a template for you below.

Facebook page cover photo size

If you're using Facebook Business to grow your brand, make sure your cover photo is the crown jewel of your Business Page.

For business pages, Facebook cover photos are a great way to show what your brand is all about and create a visual connection with your audience. However, the dimensions of the cover photo are slightly different from those of the personal profiles. They are displayed in a size of820 x 312 Pixel.

As with everything else, Facebook saves a higher resolution version when you upload it. The maximum resolution you can upload is1958px mal 745px.

(Video) Best Images Size For Facebook 2022

Facebook automatically resizes as needed for different screen resolutions.

The great thing about these new Facebook Page covers is that they no longer have a hidden area. There are no UI elements over the cover photo, nor is your profile picture partially blocking it.

You can use 100% of the space to maximize your cover photo.

However, as with my previous recommendation, I wouldn't use this space just as another banner ad.

Use it to add personality to your page - more of a branding than a marketing opportunity.

Bonus-Tipp: If you want to easily design your Facebook cover photos, I recommend two tools:canvas, andPicmonkey. Both are free to use and come with pre-made Facebook cover photo templates. For more recommendations seeThe best tools for creating visual content.

Down and Dirty Measurements:

  • Maximum size:1958px mal 745px
  • minimum:820 x 312 Pixel
  • Aspect ratio:2,63:1

Facebook group cover photo size

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (8)

Well, that's difficult because Facebook decided to make it complicated.

As you can see, it's not that easy to just upload an image in the exact display dimensions. For the group cover photo, you must have a cropped area and adjust the image vertically in the visible area.

Why? Nobody knows.

But here are the details you need to know.

The minimum viewing area is820 x 332 Pixel. However, if you upload an image of this size (or equivalent ratio), you will need to adjust it horizontally. It's a nightmare.

Instead, an image seems to be the optimal size to upload820px mal 461px. This allows you to reposition the image vertically within the visible area.

For the highest resolution, I recommend going twice as large (to accommodate retina displays) and using the dimensions of1640px mal 922px.

There are other templates and tutorials that recommend this1640×921, but I like clean numbers. Especially since Facebook scales the image to only 820px wide on standard displays, I don't want it to be scaled down to half a pixel size.

Down and Dirty Measurements:

  • Maximal:1640px mal 922px
  • Minimum:820px mal 461px
  • Aspect ratio:1,78:1

Feel free to use the following as a template to ensure you get all the important elements in viewable space.

I created it so that the larger gap is at the top. So when you upload the final image to your Facebook group, all you have to do is drag the photo up as high as possible.

Facebook event cover photo and video size

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (10)

If you're hosting an event on Facebook, make sure to use their cover photo as well.

A cover photo of the event is displayed below500px mal 262pxon standard displays.

However, for the best result, you can double these dimensions1000px mal 524pxto ensure the photo looks good on all screen resolutions.

You can also upload videos in your event headers, which will then appear the same size as an image header.

The resolution of your video may be standard HD, but be aware that it will be resized and cropped to the dimensions above. However, users can view in full screen and it will not crop there.

Facebook Image Upload Sizes

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (12)

Over the years, Facebook has gotten much better at maintaining image quality when uploading photos. It used to be absolutely awful.

Facebook image sizes and dimensions 2022: everything you need to know (13)

(Of course, I'm slightly exaggerating. But only slightly.)

Nowadays, the loss of quality when uploading a photo is very small. I am very glad that they have now made image quality a priority when resizing and optimizing photos on their platform.

If you upload a single image to a Facebook post, the maximum width it will display in the stream is492px.

The height depends on the orientation or aspect ratio of the image you upload:

  • square: In-stream viewing will be maximum492px mal 492px
  • portrait: In-stream viewing will be maximum492×738
  • landscape: In-stream viewing will be maximum492×276

Expanding images in Theater view

If you click on the image to expand it in "Theater" view (aka lightbox), it will be enlarged to fit the screen size on which it is being viewed.

There is no way to accommodate every possible screen size in the world, so the following are basic guidelines.

Facebook seems to have a cap of2048pxfor height or width.

So regardless of your image orientation if any of its measurements is higher than2048px, then Facebook resizes the image to bring that value as close as possible to 2048 pixels while maintaining the same aspect ratio for the image.

Make sense? Of course it does - you're very smart. I like you.

Well, the following sections are for the super-obsessed guys who want to know the exact pixel sizes of everything.

If you're one of those people, good for you. And let's go!

Several square oriented photos

Here are the different square image upload sizes, depending on how many photos are uploaded:

  • A square: 492 x 492 pixels
  • Two squares: 245 x 246 pixels (both)
  • Three squares: 492 x 245 pixels (top), 245 x 245 pixels (bottom two)
  • Four squares: 245 x 245 pixels (all)
  • Five squares: 245 x 245 pixels (top two), 163 x 163 pixels (bottom left, bottom right), 162 x 163 pixels (bottom center)
  • Six Squares: Same as 5, but the lower right photo has an overlay showing the number of photos not showing.

For anything over six images, the layout is exactly the same.

Several portrait photos

If you are uploading multiple portrait photos, here are the different sizes depending on how many are uploaded:

  • A portrait: 492 x 738 pixels
  • Two portrait format: 245 x 492 pixels
  • Three portrait format: 327 x 492 pixels (left), 163 x 245 pixels (top and bottom right)
  • Four portrait format: 327 x 492 pixels (left), 163 x 163 pixels (top and bottom right), 163 x 162 pixels (center right)
  • Five Portrait: 245 x 245 pixels (top two), 163 x 163 pixels (bottom left, bottom right), 162 x 163 pixels (bottom center)
  • Six Portrait: Same as 5, but the lower right photo has an overlay showing the number of photos not showing.

Again, the layout is exactly the same for anything over six images.

Several landscape photos

Hopefully you're seeing a pattern now. Here are the layouts for uploading multiple landscape photos.

  • A landscape: 492 x 276 pixels
  • Two landscape formats: 492 x 245 pixels
  • Three landscape formats: 492 x 327 pixels (top), 245 x 163 pixels (bottom left and right)
  • Four landscape formats: 492 x 327 pixels (top), 163 x 163 pixels (bottom left, bottom right), 162 x 163 pixels (bottom center)
  • Five landscape formats: 245 x 245 pixels (top left and bottom left), 245 x 163 pixels (top right and bottom right), 145 x 162 pixels (middle right)
  • Six Landscape: Same as 5, but the lower right photo has an overlay showing the number of photos not showing.

And if you guessed that the layout would be exactly the same for anything over six images, then you're 100% right!

Upload photos with multiple orientations

If you upload multiple images, all with different sizes and orientations, Facebook will base the layout on the first photo.

So if your first photo is a portrait, you can expect the portrait layouts to be applied based on the number of photos uploaded.

Make sense? Great, let's continue now.

Images from Facebook ads

In case you didn't know, there are several ways you can use images in Facebook ads. And image specifications vary depending on where you want your ads to appear.

Current Facebook ad image placements include:

  • Facebook-Feed: Appears inline as a standard Facebook post
  • Facebook right column: The small dot at the bottom of the right sidebar only in Facebook on desktop
  • Facebook Instant Article: This is a special article format for delivering fast-loading articles to mobile devices
  • Facebook Marketplace: This is similar to the Facebook feed type and will only appear on Marketplace (mobile only)
  • Sponsored Message: These ads will appear like any Facebook message from a friend
  • Messenger home page: These appear on the main Home page of the Facebook Messenger app

The recommended image size for a promotional image is1200 x 628 Pixelthis gives an aspect ratio of1,91:1.

However, since you can advertise on Facebook by promoting your Page's posts, all previous image sizes, dimensions and layouts may apply.

The only cases where the1200 x 628 PixelThe image rule applies to link posts, which we'll talk about next.

Link post images

Measure shared link images that appear on personal timelines or when they appear in the news feeds476px mal 249px. To ensure a high resolution image is the recommended image size1200 x 628 Pixel.

Now, the problem here is that Facebook no longer gives you the option to customize the image that is displayed when you share a link to a website. The image must be automatically pulled from the target web page.

That means if you share your own website pages, you need to make sure you have the right HTML markup — known as Open Graph — on those pages that identifies the image you want Facebook to use.

It just so happens that one of the products that I helped designsocial warfare, you can easily do this if you use WordPress.

And of course I have a template for that.
